Holiday Drunk Driving Arrests Down Overall

Posted On: December 22nd, 2016 by Bradley J. Groene

As we approach a Christmas holiday where a record number of motorists are expected to be on the road, safety during Christmas travel is a concern for everyone. Some recent statistics provide a bit of good news as it relates to travel safety since it appears Christmas drunk driving arrests might be on the decline. However, drunk driving is still a serious problem in Ohio and you can expect the Ohio State Patrol and local law enforcement to have a strong presence on the roads over the Christmas holiday.

Holiday Drunk Driving Arrests Decreased Significantly in 2015

There was a considerable decline in the number of drunk driving arrests during the 2015 Christmas holiday period over the previous year. Ohio State Patrol statistics show that there was a nearly 20 percent decrease in the number of OVI arrests during the Christmas holiday period in 2015 in comparison to the 2014 Christmas holiday.

While a change in the arrest numbers from one year to the next could be attributable to a variety of factors, the statistics provided for the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday provide some hope that holiday drivers are becoming more responsible. The number of OVI arrests during the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday showed a decline of over 8 percent as compared to 2015.

Drunk Driving Continues to Be a Problem in Ohio

The good news provided by recent Christmas and Thanksgiving holiday statistics is dampened a bit by the reality that drunk driving is still a serious threat to Ohio travelers. Even with the decline in drunk driving arrests over the 2015 Christmas holiday, there were still 41 OVI arrests in the Ohio State Patrol district that encompasses Cincinnati and its suburbs. That means that in the Cincinnati area alone there was an average of over 10 drunk driving arrests per day during the 2015 Christmas holiday.

While the arrest numbers for the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday showed a decline, the number of OVI arrests in Ohio for the entire year so far has shown an increase of more than 3 percent over 2015.

How a Cincinnati Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Help

The Ohio State Patrol regularly uses this time of year to remind Ohioans that they will be out in force during the holiday season to remove impaired drivers from the roads in an effort to reduce fatal crashes. Even if the statistics indicate Christmas drunk driving incidents may be on the decline, it is not a time to be complacent. One drink too many during a Christmas party could easily lead to you becoming one of the hundreds of Ohioans each year who get arrested for drunk driving over the Christmas holiday. If you find yourself facing drunk driving charges over the holidays, or at any other time of the year, you’ll face stiff DUI penalties and will need an experienced Cincinnati DUI defense attorney who understands the best defenses against those charges.

Attorney Brad Groene has represented hundreds of OVI clients over the years and has worked hard to achieve the best possible outcome in each case. Contact Luftman, Heck & Associates to get the help that you need.
